AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - On Saturday, the Georgia Cancer Center hosted its annual Unite in the Fight Against Cancer.

Survivors, friends and family joined in one mile walk celebrating and honoring those who have been impacted by cancer.

The event helps show survivors that the community is supporting them in their fight.

"It's a hard diagnosis to accept, but the experience is very eye opening," pancreatic cancer survivor Lawanda Everett says. "The support that you receive from the community is very helpful towards my recovery and my remission."

Money raised from this event goes towards Georgia Cancer Center initiatives such as providing cooling caps for chemotherapy, covering costs for treatments and funding free screenings.

"Just letting them know that people care and people know," Andrea Rhoden, a breast surgical oncology nurse navigator says. "Then, there's cancers that get a lot of attention and some cancers that don't get quite as much attention or people don't even realize they're out there. So, this walk is for all cancer survivors and their families and I don't think there's anybody out there that hasn't been touched by cancer."
