JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ga (WFXG) - A Jefferson County baseball player is getting more attention than he's used to thanks to his heroic actions on a different type of field.

Evin Usry is a senior at Jefferson County High School and the starting pitcher for the baseball team. Tuesday, April 23, he played his last game. They lost in the playoffs in Metter, Georgia which is about 25 miles from Statesboro. With a mix of emotions, tired and frustrated, he started the trip back home to Wrens and that's when he noticed someone needed his help.

"So we were on our way back. It was starting to get dark and all of sudden we see a bunch of cows and I have no idea where they came from. So we pulled over, stopped and I got out. The guy that lived in the house next to the road came out and I helped him drive the cows back down the dirt road to the fence where they came in from," Usry said.

He did not know at the time, but later found out, the man he helped was at the baseball game he had just left cheering for the opposing team. The man's wife took to Facebook and talked about how thankful she was for Usry and his kindness.

“Thank you for your act of kindness, when you could have kept driving and no one would have known the difference. Thank you for setting a good example for your teammates and classmates in going out of your way to do the right thing,” Terri Bland said.

"I saw mama text me and my counselor text me about it," Usry said. "it was pretty cool to see what she posted and what she said about me."

Needless to say, the post got a lot of attention on social media and Jefferson County High School got wind of it. The principal says this act does not surprise him at all.

"When I read the information about the kind acts that happened, I said, okay, that’s Evin. Just a hard worker. He really loves his school, he really loves his community, and he really loves people,” explains Carl Prescott, Jefferson County High School Principal.

Prescott said he thinks Usry is a great example for other students to follow. Usry said he appreciates all the kind words, but said he did what he did because he knew it was the right thing to do.

"Always give 110% in everything you do. Even though it might be something small, you never know what the outcome could be," Usry said.
