BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WFXG) - Speed cameras are installed in Burke County along parts of Highway 25. This decision comes after numerous traffic violations in the area.

The Sheriff's Office is hoping that this will help uphold the designated 45-mile-per-hour speed limit.

According to Captain Brand Reeves with the Burke County Sheriff's Office, statistics from a traffic study led to the installation of these cameras.

"...traffic study before these cameras went into effect. In 12 hours, 350 speeding violations happened in front of the high school. During the school hours there were 150 speeding violations" Captain Reeves explained.

Two cameras are currently placed on Highway 25 at the beginning and end of the school zone. The plan was for the cameras to go online starting Wednesday, April 24th but due to technical difficulties that date has been pushed back.

"We had some technical issues, the technician contacted Altumint and in turn, they contacted us. Just to be transparent, we want to keep everyone informed of where we are at with this." Captain Reeves said.

This project came at no charge for The Sheriff's Office. Everything was taken care of by a company called Altumint, which specializes in speed cameras. When the cameras are fully operational, violators will pay their ticket to the Sheriff's Office as well as a fee to Altumint.

FOX54 spoke with parents and residents in Burke County about the new cameras.

"People should understand that they are supposed to drive 45 in those areas. I think it's a good think to keep people accountable." Eric Brown a Burke County resident said.

"Kids make bad decisions and drive fast. So, if it's going to keep that kid safe, I'm for it." said another resident.
