Golden Harvest Food Bank works to scare away hunger

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - One local organization is working to scare away hunger from communities in the CSRA. Golden Harvest Food Bank is in it’s 26th year of its Spooky to Be Hungry program.

Spooky to Be Hungry is an initiative to rid the local communities of hunger. Leaders at Golden Harvest Food Bank will be working to collect foods and funds to help benefit people in the area.

This fundraising event is Golden Harvest’s largest of the year. It brings businesses, neighborhoods and schools together to fight hunger from Richmond and Columbia counties in Georgia, and Aiken County in South Carolina. They do this by collecting non-perishable food items and organizing virtual food drives throughout October.

Christina Alexander, Golden Harvest Communications Coordinator, says this it’s important to help those in need because no one should have to go hungry. " We would love to beat what we raised last year, we raised 262 thousand meals last year and we just always want to be able to provide more and more for the people who are in need here so really any little bit helps, we would love to see peoples nutritious non-perishable food items and also if they’d like to donate online we can provide three meals for every dollar that’s donated."

If you live in a Spooky neighborhood you can get involved by becoming a neighborhood captain and volunteering. orange bags will be distributed in neighborhoods to collect non-perishable food items. Neighborhood captains and volunteers will collect orange bag donations from Aiken and Richmond counties on Oct. 20. Donations from Columbia County will be collected Oct. 27.
