BARNWELL COUNTY, S.C. (WFXG) - The Barnwell County Sheriff's Office's "GRITS" reading program is underway. Officials held the first session Tuesday at the McDonald's in Barnwell.

The program aims to help children develop their literacy skills. Members of the sheriff's office read books on important issues that impact kids. At the end of each session, every child receives a free book. The sheriff's office is partnering with the local McDonald's and Barnwell County's "First Steps" program to offer the reading sessions.

The "GRITS" reading program takes place every Tuesday this month at the Barnwell McDonald's from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
