AUGUSTA, Ga. - A busy weekend for Augusta this weekend.

Families are visiting Augusta from all over to celebrate students and their mothers this weekend.

It always falls on the same weekend, meaning the Garden City has a lot of visitors in town.

Last year, 2,578 graduates walked the stage bringing many families to the city.

This year, Mamie McAbee with Augusta and Co says with the number of visitors they saw in 2023, they have added extra merchandise to welcome graduates and their moms.

“We’ve had a good influx here and we expect to see a bit more tomorrow but people will come in with their mothers and they’ll buy special locally made gifts from some of our local retail partners and also for au graduation we’ll see a lot of family members, it was actually one of our biggest weekends last year so we’ve added some Augusta University t-shirts that you can only get here,” said McAbee.

Restaurants prepare for this rush with additional staff.

“There’s definitely more foot traffic down here, we’re going to expect it to be a little busy, people bringing their moms down we hope to see it. We’re pretty staffed up, we’re ready for the crowds,” said nacho mama manager, Trevor Speed.

Speaking of bringing their moms downtown Augusta, Stephanie Weigle came into town to celebrate her mom this week.

“Our favorite thing is movies and TV and wine so we primarily just eat together and cook together and then we find something to watch together so last night was Chronicles of Narnia,” said Weigle.

Rhodes and Weigle also have had fun seeing students celebrating their graduations.

Rhodes says, “It’s hard getting around down here.”

“But it’s been fun getting to see everyone in their garb though and graduation caps and all that it’s been good to see,” said Weigle.

Whether people are here celebration a student’s achievement or a special mom, it is safe to say Augusta is prepared to welcome all visitors with open arms.
