FT. EISENHOWER, Ga (WFXG) - In a federal courtroom, a military wife pleaded "not guilty" to murdering her 11-month-old baby.

April Evalyn Short, 30, was indicted several months ago on charges of premeditated murder and felony murder over the November 15 death.

On December 5, 2023, Short was charged with one count of premeditated murder and one count of felony murder. She was admitted to Federal Medical Center, Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas for two months of mental evaluation. The document says Short exhibited "worrisome symptoms of psychosis" before arriving at the medical center, but she "stabilized once she began regularly taking psychiatric medications."

After two months at the medical center, the court found Short competent to stand trial. They say she is not "presently suffering from a mental disease or defect rendering her mentally incompetent to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings against her."
