AUGUSTA, Ga. - Current Augusta Commissioners confirm with FOX54 that James "Jimmy" Smith Jr. has died. He was the former Augusta District 8 commissioner.

Smith was on the commission when both the T-Center parking deck and a new Richmond County Sheriff's Office building were approved.

"He was a little older than I, but I always respected him and thought a lot of him. He was what I considered to be one of the most honest, truthful and dependable commissioners that Augusta-Richmond County has had," said Don Grantham, former Augusta Commissioner.

Grantham says he sends out thoughts and prayers for the Smith family.

"The family should be honored with his [Smith's] passing. His passing honors them in a way that he was such a man of Christ," Grantham said.
