RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WFXG) - A deputy is recovering after being injured in an incident at the Columbia County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.

According to reports, the incident began when Bobby Burnett visited the sheriff's office for a background check. However, things took a serious turn when it was discovered that Burnett had an active probation violation warrant.

A press release says Burnett left the building and started walking to his vehicle, where two deputies confronted him.

During the confrontation, investigators say Burnett got into his car and drove away, dragging Lieutenant Brandon Thacker down County Camp Road for around 100 yards before he was able to break free. Dispatchers were alerted to the situation and provided a description of Burnett's vehicle and the direction he was traveling.

The report goes on to say a deputy spotted the vehicle on Columbia Road at South Old Belair Road. Investigators say a brief pursuit took place, and the Georgia State Patrol assisted by pitting the vehicle on Warren Road.

Burnett has been charged with Aggravated assault involving a law enforcement officer, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and fleeing/attempting to elude.

According to officials, ambulance and fire rescue units provided medical attention, and Lieutenant Thacker was taken to the hospital.
As of the latest update, he is listed in stable condition.
