EDGEFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WFXG) - Former Edgefield County Sheriff Raymond "Billy" Parker, who served the community for decades, has died at 87. He died Tuesday, March 19 in Johnston.

Parker worked as a deputy for 16 years with the Edgefield County Sheriff's Department and served as sheriff for 20 years.

Parker was also a volunteer firefighter and chief for many years in Johnston.

He was one of the first officers to attend the police academy in Columbia.

Parker was born in Aiken County, attended Johnston High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1959.

Parker's family said he loved the county and people of Edgefield. He was very involved in the community as a member of several organizations including the Sertoma Club, Ridge Fishing Club and Lazy 8 Fishing Club of Plum Branch.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25 at Mt. of Olives Cemetery in Johnston.
