NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WFXG) - A North Augusta Corporal helped a child injured in a shooting. He says he always wants to help others.

"This actual job is not for everyone. I like to tell everybody it’s not something that you choose, it’s something that chooses you.” said Cpl. William Mays, North Augusta Department of Public Safety.

The call to the badge hits close to home for CPL. William Mays.

"My dad has been in law enforcement ever since I could remember, I at least know about two years old. He actually started his career actually in the Augusta Police Department, which is now the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Once he left there, he came to North Augusta.” said CPL. Mays.

CPL. Mays is a North Augusta native dedicating nearly a decade of service to NADPS.

"I feel like I’m doing something to actually improve the community, not just the individuals here, but the people who are visiting, especially my family members...One of the main things we want to do is help those who can’t help themselves.” said CPL. Mays.

He’ll never forget helping a child who became a shooting victim.

"I was able to get that child and actually picked him up and took him to EMS and everything. The whole time I talked to him, he was very, very calm,” said CPL. Mays.

FOX54 salutes CPL. William Mays.

"For me, I want to make sure everybody in the community knows I’m there for them.”

CPL. Mays hopes to become a lieutenant someday. He says, even then, he will continue seeking opportunities to lead and serve.
