HEPHZIBAH, Ga. (WFXG) - Mayor Garnett Johnson visited McBean Elementary in celebration of Read Across America Day.

According to the White House, Read Across America Day is a time "to recognize the value of literacy to our democracy." It is celebrated annually on March 2nd, the birthday of famed children's author Dr. Seuss.

In the CSRA, several elementary schools have celebrated throughout the week with character dress-up days, themed parades, and visits from special guests, such as Mayor Johnson, who read "Pig the Slob" by Aaron Blabey.

"It was a fun morning reading, talking, and laughing with our city's future leaders," Johnson told FOX54.

McBean students also received a visit from Auggie, the Augusta Greenjackets mascot, on Wednesday as part of the school's spring reading program.
