AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - A local deputy hopes to be a role model in his own department and out on the streets. This isn't just because of his badge, but the reason behind his calling.

Deputy Desmond Wells works road patrol. However, his role extends beyond tires to pavement.

“For the most part, I’d say I’m more of like a coach.” said Deputy Desmond Wells, Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Wells also serves as a field training officer.

“I mean…Just making an impact with different deputies and showing them the ropes…” said Deputy Wells.

His career spans a decade.

"Believe it or not, I’ve been in law enforcement 10 years. It don’t look like it.”

A key goal for this deputy: being a positive influence and the representation he didn't always see.

"I mean…You can’t reach all of them, but it’s just the simple fact of trying. Growing up, it wasn’t a lot of law enforcement presence in our area. I started patrolling in the area I grew up in. That’s one of the most humbling things I experienced when I first started out.”

Deputy Wells feels grateful every call, now knowing each one can leave a mark - like responding to a welfare check and seeing the same caller again later.

"For me it was a welfare check, but for him it was a lifechanging call. He said, I just wanted to say thank you because I couldn’t have did what you did.”

FOX54 salutes Deputy Desmond Wells.

"A lot of people are scared to do this job. So, being one of the ones out here to try to steer people in the right direction… It just shows that you can do the right thing and help people.”

Deputy Wells says his long term goal is to become a Major within the department.
