Keysville Mayor's home hit by gunfire in drive-by shooting
KEYSVILLE, Ga (WFXG) - In such a small area like Keysville, which is only one square mile, crime is rare. Sunday night, Burke County deputies responded to 523 Ga. Highway 88 about shots fired in the area.
"My mind kind of blanked out because the only thing that I could think about was surviving and making sure that my children are okay," says Mayor Davis.
That night, the mayor of Keysville was inside her home with her grandchildren. She tells us that her front window had been struck twice. A bullet hole can be found near the window and two other bullet holes are found on the side of the house.
The mayor's house wasn't the only one struck. Further down the road, another house was hit on Martin Luther King Jr road. Anita Powell also heard the gunshots. She went to go check on her son, and as she was knocking on the door, she says a car came through and someone started shooting at her home.
Burke County deputies have been patrolling the area since the shootings.
Sheriff Alfonzo Williams sent a statement to FOX54, stating:
"We are actively working on the investigation and following up on leads. We believe this incident is gang-related and we expect to hold accountable those persons responsible. We are offering a 1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those persons responsible for this senseless act of violence. There were children in both residences, and this could have been disastrous. Whether personal injury or property damage we are taking the matter seriously and we expect to prosecute the case to the fullest extent allowed by law."
Burke County Sheriff's Office is working with Mayor Davis to ensure the residents are safe and to prevent any further violence.
