RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WFXG) - Candidates are now able to qualify for Richmond County's District 6 school board seat.

The position is unofficially held by A.K. Hassan, who was the District 6 school board member until redistricting kept him from running for re-election in 2022. He took over the position after the death of twenty-year-old Tyrique Robinson. Robinson ran unopposed in the November election and would have been the youngest person ever elected to the Richmond County School Board.

Candidates are able to qualify for the position Jan. 17-19.

Candidate Ed Lowery showed up at the Richmond County Municipal Building Tuesday to throw his hat in the ring.

Lowery says that, as a product of Richmond County schools and a graduate of Glenn Hills High School, he sees this as an opportunity to serve some very important people. "Our children… our children need us. I want to go and represent district 6 in a quality way. We can come together as parents, leaders, pastors and preachers, as a community to help our children receive the best education that they can. I just want to help make a difference. Our children are suffering. They're calling out for us every day. I just want to be a part of that change."

The special election will be held Mar. 21.
