North Augusta parent posts viral TikTok of bus aide incident
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WFXG) - A NORTH AUGUSTA PARENT IS ASKING THE aiken county public SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HOLD A BUS AIDE ACCOUNTABLE FOR AN INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED ON A SCHOOL BUS INVOLVING HER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT.
IT STARTED IN SEPTEMBER WHEN A BUS AIDE ASKED TO SIT WITH THE STUDENT. HE DECLINED SAYING THAT THERE WAS A BUS FULL OF SEATS AND HE DIDN’T WANT TO GET COVID-19. IN THe VIRAL TIKTOK VIDEO POSTED BY NORTH AUGUSTA High school PARENT, EULA WHITE ON NOVEMBER 19TH. her son took to the app to document the encounter. in the video, her son REFUSES TO SIT WITH THE BUS MONITOR AND TELLS HER HE’S RECORDING on his phone FOR HER SAFETY AND HIS.
“I REFUSE TO SCOOT OVER MA’AM, YOU HAVE OPEN SEATS EVERYWHERE AND YOU WANT TO SIT BY ME....DON’T YOU THINK THAT’S A LITTLE INCONVENIENT for BOTH OF US," the student says. "MONKEY POX, MAY I GET SIX FEET PLEASE?"
then, the aid responds, pointing to her hand: "SEE, LOOK, LOOK, MONKEY POX."
The student then asks: EXCUSE ME, MA’AM, CAN YOU GET YOUR HAND AWAY FROM ME PLEASE.”
NEXT THE video shows what appears to be the bus AIDE COUGHing in his direction. sHe then LEANS TOward ANOTHER STUDENT TO ASK IF HE’S GOING TO BEAT HIM UP. she says in part, “ARE YOU GONNA BEAT UP ON HIM?" "HE’S GONNA GET IN SO MUCH TROUBLE.”
WHITE REPORTS THAT SHORTLY AFTER THIS incident THE BUS DRIVER WENT HOME SICK. HER SON ALSO BECAME SICK DAYS LATER and MISSed OVER A WEEK OF SCHOOL.
WHITE HADN’T HEARD FROM the SCHOOL SINCE SEPTEMBER. BUT AFTER THE TIKTOK STARTED GAINING TRACTION, THEY TOLD HER IT HAD BEEN HANDLED AND THE AIDE HAD ALREADY RECEIVED DISCIPlINARY ACTION. THE ASSIsTANT PRINCIPAL ALSO INFORMED HER THAT HER SON WAS SUSPENDED FROM THE BUS FOR REMAINDER OF SCHOOL YEAR FOR A SEPARATE INCIDENT IN WHICH HE HARASsED THE BUS AIDE. “THE PAPER THEY SENT ME SAID THAT THE REASON WHY he was BEING SUSPENDED OFF THE BUS IS BECAUSE HE WAS HARASSING THE MONITOR, VIDEOeD HER AND OTHER KIDS ON THE BUS AND IT’S POSTED ALL OVER SOCIAL MEDIA." "THE ONLY VIDEO THAT’S ON SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE ONE THAT I POSTED,” says White.
THE NEXT DAY, THE SCHOOL CALLED SAYING THEY HAD MADE A MISTAKE AND HER SON COULD RETURN TO THE BUS IF HE WROTE A STATEMENT ABOUT THE SECOND INCIDENT. WHITE AGREED, IF SHE COULD VIEW THE SECOND BUS VIDEO IN QUESTION. SHE SAYS shortly after THEY TOOK HIM OUT OF CLASS TO SIGN THE STATEMENT, WITHOUT HER CONSENT. white CLAIMS that SHE STILL HASN’T BEEN TOLD WHAT THAT STATEMENT ENTAILS and THE SCHOOL SAYS THERE’S NO WARRANT FOR HER TO SEE THE VIDEO.
WHITE FEELS THIS SUSpENSION IS A RETALIATION. “THEY’VE BEEN ON THE SAME BUS FROM SEPTEMBER TO NOW...BUT NOW THAT THIS VIDEO IS VIRAL." "NOW, YOU’RE SAYING HE IS HARASSING HER, YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I’M SAYING AND IT DOESN’T SIT RIGHT WITH ME." "I WANT TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF IT BECAUSE I REALLY WANT TO KNOW.”
THE SCHOOL ALSO TOLD WHITE that HER SON IS NO LONGER ALLOWED TO HAVE HIS PHONE ON BUS. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SAYs THEY WENT BY THE RULE BOOK. BUT, SHE WANTS TRANSPARENCY AND TO SEE THE OTHER PARTIES HELD ACCOUNTABLE TOO.
WE REACHED OUT TO THE AIKEN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR A STATEMENT REGARDING THE TWO INCIDENTS. that statement reads:
In late September, our district administration investigated a personnel matter which was recently posted on social media. A separate circumstance has been investigated this week, along with a review of the student disciplinary consequences which followed.
These separate incidents challenge the fundamental expectations of mutual respect as defined in our student code of conduct and employee handbook and are being addressed according to those guidelines and in accordance with applicable policies.
