FORT GORDON, Ga. (WFXG) - Sergeant First Class Robert Powell has been in the army for thirteen years. He’s seen his fair share of time of the battlefield as a Field Artillery specialist.

Powell reclassed to Signal, which eventually brought him to Fort Gordon. Now instead of artillery shells, Powell is fighting another battle.

“It’s one of the most important programs within the military,” Powell said. The program Powell is referring to is S.H.A.R.P, or Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention.

In 2020, over six thousand cases of sexual assaults were reported on military basis nationwide. That’s where SFC Powell and his group come in. “We aid in them as much as possible, provide them with as many resources that are available to us at the time.”

Those resources include working with law enforcement, doctors and mental health experts.

“Without our program, they would have nowhere to run to,” Powell said.
