EAT.PLAY.GO. to Savannah Rapids Park
COLUMBIA COUNTY (WFXG) - Vickie Mogilefsky the Visitor Services Coordinator for the Savannah Rapids Park says the park is, "A unique area to visit. The rapids run 4 miles downstream.”
The park is located in Columbia County and is the perfect place to get out and enjoy some nature. Mogilefsky says, “When you walk across the head gates you’ll see the diversion dam in the Savannah River and with that that is our fall line between the Piedmont and the Coastal Plains.”
Columbia County says the park improves quality of life for people that live in the area, but she says the best part, “One of the nice things about it, it’s free to come to the park do a picnic lunch and come join us.”
Along the Savannah River, you can also rent kayaks, paddleboards or bikes. “if they will come out and be able to enjoy and tell us what they’re looking to do it really does help us to know what we need to do for them. We feel that when our locals can enjoy the area they’re wonderful salespeople,” says Mogilefsky.
The park is also rich with history, you can stop by the visitor center to get a history lesson. The center itself is actually the old lock keeper’s cottage. The building housed the lock keeper who operated the nearby locks and was built in 1890. Mogilefsky says, “So many people come in and say we’ve been here 15 years and had no idea about different attractions we’re telling them about.”
The park says it’s the prefect spot for family fun, “Come out and enjoy being outside and enjoy Columbia County we’re here to serve you.”
