EAT.PLAY.GO. to Gay's Christmas Tree Farm
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - FOX54 anchor, Danielle Ledbetter and Weather Now Meteorologist Trevor Gibbs head to Gay’s Christmas Tree Farm in Augusta to search for the perfect Christmas tree.
Gay’s Christmas tree farm owner, Matthew Gay, explains what they have, “We’ve got fresh-cut Frasier firs from North Carolina, in the field we’ve got the Murray cypress here the dark green tree, and then we’ve got a Carolina Sapphire or Arizona Cypress."
Gay says, "It’s just my passion.” It's definitely a passion, after working a full time job he owns and works at the farm as a hobby.
For Matthew Gay, it’s bigger than trees. “We don’t we don’t sell trees we provide a family experience. We have a lot of families come out. Just enjoy themselves. We have the hayride, hot chocolate, popcorn the fire pit, s’mores.”
It’s all about tradition, says Gay. He adds, “Thirty years ago I did not on this property that were standing on today. I woke up one day and decided I wanted to grow Christmas trees I cut them down and sold them on the side of the street and I sold out of trees. ”
That was years ago. Now in his 20th season, Gay likes to educate his customers on the advantages and disadvantages for the different types of trees. So after giving Trevor the rundown it was time to search.
Gay says, “It’s all about getting the families out. Having a good time and getting a good tree. I live out here and I want people when they pass by my house to say you know we got a good quality tree and we’re going back to Mr. Gay's next year.”
The farm is located at 2335 Tobacco Road. They’re open tomorrow from Monday through Thursday 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., Friday 2 p.m. until 7 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.
