MARTINEZ, Ga. (WFXG) - El Rey opened its doors five years ago. The family owned restaurant wanted to showcase their take on authentic Mexican Cuisine.

Patricia Galvan, one of the El Rey owners, says, “We’ve lived in Augusta all of our lives and when we were younger we really craved having something kind of like this to go to and be able to eat authentic Mexican food.”

Galvan, her parents and two brothers own El Rey.

Galvan says, “At first there was a little bit of a hiccup to get people to try the authentic part of the Mexican food but once they got a taste of it they were like it’s good it’s different but it’s good.”

She gave us a rundown of their most popular items, “Our tortillas are hand made and made from scratch...we have a salsa bar with 20 different kinds of salsas and we rotate them each day so you can try different flavors every time you come back.”

“Our tacos are a must try when you come. The burritos…we have a big burrito challenge so it’s like five pounds. You have 35 minutes to try it and we’ve only had 2 people.

She says if you win, “You don’t pay for the burrito, you get a free shirt and a picture.”
