RICHMOND COUNTY (WFXG) - Judge Sheryl B. Jolly denied bond for Smitty Oliver Melton on Friday, September 4, at a virtual bond hearing. Melton is charged with the murder of an Augusta Code Enforcement Officer and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
During the bond hearing, District Attorney Natalie Paine said her office highly opposed bond for Melton, due to the severity of his charges and prior history. Melton's attorney, Sean Gamble, made a case for bond for his client. Gamble went over Melton's history as a Navy veteran and Augusta native. He also added that there is a possible alibi for Melton.
