AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - FOX 54 is learning more about the Richmond County code enforcement officer who was shot and killed last Thursday.

Fellow service members shared their memories of Officer Charles Case during the time they shared with him in Sangin, Afghanistan in 2011.

As a Platoon sergeant, service members remember Officer Charles Case as a leader who made a difference. "He was a very calming person. Just one of the kindest people you'd ever meet which always isn't the case for someone in his position," Nate Dueck said.

One time, Officer Case's family sent Christmas gifts to Afghanistan. It made many of the marines feel as if they were apart of his family.

"It was something that turned everything around. You know for that moment, you forget where you're at. You're with people you love, people that love you. It was just really cool for them to think about everybody," Luke Lozano said.

When going back home, they say it's easy to go off the radar, but it's tragedies like Officer Case's passing that remind them how short life can be.

"I started talking to some folks again, you know that we deployed with, you know friends of ours. Still friends, but again you don't necessarily talk to them all the time. I'm on the East coast, a lot of these guys are on the West coast. It's just different you know," Dueck said.

In the end, they tell me it was difficult to maintain a smile while serving in Afghanistan, but it was those like Case who reminded them of the calm in the storm.

Many of the marines, let Case's family know how much he meant to them on Facebook. A post by Ian Jackson reads in part, "He was the most caring and genuine person I have met, I will be eternally grateful for his guidance."
