Columbia County Board of Education tentatively approves new budget
COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - Raises could be on the horizon for Columbia County School District employees.
The Board of Education unanimously tentatively approved a proposed $262.3 million budget Tuesday night. That’s a $14.5 million increase from last year’s budget. Half of that increase will be $7 million from state funds for certified employees each getting $3,000 raises. Non-certified employees would receive a 2% raise, totaling $780,000 in the proposed budget. In addition, the district plans to hire more educators for all grade levels.
Superintendent Dr. Sandra Carraway says, "So, we are hiring 56 new teachers and we have 12 teacher positions in contingency. So that when the new year begins and new families come to us we will be well prepared to provide well for them and ensure that our class sizes remain appropriate.
Governor Brian Kemp promised teachers a pay raise during his campaign. The board will consider final approval of the budget on the May 28 board meeting.
