WARRENVILLE, SC (WFXG) - A vigil was held on Oxpens Road in Warrenville on Tuesday, September 25, at 8:30 p.m. to honor the three-year-old toddler who lost his life after accidentally shooting himself on Monday, September 24. The three-year-old is named McKinley "Booney" Chavous IV, and his yard on Oxpens Road was completely filled with people, even pouring out onto the street, for the vigil.
His family members say that as they were arriving for the vigil, they couldn't believe the outpour of support that they saw. Their part of the neighborhood was lit up with candles as they remembered Booney. They said a few words on his behalf, took a moment of silence, and released balloons in his honor before ending in prayer.
The family says this is hard, and a tragedy that's something you might hear about, but never think it will happen to you. His grandfather said, "[We are taking it] one day at a time. We pick up the pieces... We will grieve in the way he have to grieve." He added that the outpouring of love and people coming to the vigil showed that they are not alone. He says they will continue to need support and thoughts and prayers, and they're thankful for everyone who came out.
