Safe Kids warns parents to make sure their children practice ATV safety

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Attention parents! Augusta Health & Safe Kids wants to let you know about safety measures if you plan on letting your kids ride an ATV.

You might remember that there have been several deadly ATV accidents in the CSRA, the most recent just one week ago in Emanuel County. According to Safe Kids, there are approximately 650 people who die from an ATV every year. About 1/4 are children under age 16. Simple tips like making sure your child has a helmet and is riding a child's ATV as opposed to an adult one can make them safer.

Renee McCabe with Safe Kids says, "It's 600 pounds and they're likely to flip over and that's the high risk is roll overs with them. 600 pounds on a small child is fatal, there's a lot of head and neck injuries, spinal cord injuries & fatalities."

Safe Kids says always supervise your kids as well or make sure adults are around while riding.
