Police investigating deadly hit-and-run in Aiken

AIKEN, SC (WFXG) - Aiken police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run in the city.

A man, later identified as 33-year-old Christopher Holmes, was struck and killed on the 1100 block of York St. NE at around 2:35 a.m. Friday morning. Police say the driver left the scene. The vehicle involved has been identified as a dark-colored SUV

A witness who saw the collision says he was talking to the man as he was getting ready to cross the road. "By the time he made it right here to the middle of the road, he was hit... by the time I ran right to the drain hole right there at the bank, the victim was laying on the side of the road."

As of 6:00 p.m on Friday, August 3,  the investigation is continuing. Officers reviewed surveillance video from the area and interviewed witnesses throughout the morning. It has been determined the vehicle involved is a dark colored SUV which should have sustained front-end damage.

FOX 54 is still working to uncover more information about this hit-and-run. We will update this story as more info becomes available. This is the first traffic fatality inside the Aiken city limits in 2018.
