Columbia County Schools to start the year with 23 new school safety officers

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - After recent school shootings across the country, schools right here in the CSRA have started taking action. In Columbia County, the school district has added 23 safety officers to their school safety team. Previously, the school district had only nine safety officers. Each officer was assigned to about four schools each. With the added staff, every school in Columbia County now has its own safety officer.

Every officer on the team has at least five years of experience in some type of law enforcement. Their experiences range from secret service to police officer. Penny Jackson, Assistant Superintendent of Columbia County Schools, said, "We like to call them safety gurus because they come to us with a wealth of experience. They are going to be able to give back to the community what they've been able to utilize through their unique experiences each and every day with our kids."

In addition to the security guards, Columbia County Schools is also adding name badges for students and teachers, and radios that connect the school directly to the police station.

On Thursday, August 2, the department will be participating in active shooter training. FOX 54 will be at that event and will give you a look at the training.
