Charges dropped against parents of teen involved in deadly hit-and-run

MCDUFFIE COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - Charges have been dropped on the parents of a teenager who reportedly was in a deadly crash in McDuffie County. It took the life of a sheriff's office investigator.

Investigator William Frank Dodson was killed in that crash on May 3rd at the intersection of Black and East Hill Street. Reports say the other driver left the scene.

The parents of the juvenile Columbia County driver, Brian Atkins Sr. and Jacquelyn Atkins, will not face charges - for now. According to court documents obtained by FOX 54, "the Grand Jury did not have the benefit of this evidence to consider in making their decision" and in order to let McDuffie County citizens make a fair decision, charges were dropped.

Jacquelyn Atkins had been charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of permitting an unlicensed person to drive. Brian Atkins Senior had been charged with tampering with evidence.

The case, along with the new evidence, will be re-presented to the Grand Jury on August 16th.
