WAYNESBORO, GA (WFXG) - Mayor Greg Carswell, along with B.R.I.D.G.E., Waynesboro Police Department, and Burke County Sheriff's Department will be holding a press conference and proclamation about making June gun violence awareness month in Waynesboro. Gun Violence Awareness Month was created in an effort to raise awareness surrounding the issue of needless and senseless gun violence in the communities. The focus of this effort is to lead a bipartisan charge to concentrate annual heightened attention to gun violence and gun safety each June. "We believe in the second amendment as well as the need to focus on responsible ownership, unnecessary violence, and gun safety," said Carswell.
There will be kids and parents in attendance, as well as people who have been affected by gun violence.
The city will also be decorated in orange. On Friday, June 01, 2018 the first part will be held in front of the Burke County Court House at 602 N. Liberty St at 5:30pm. If it rains, they will move to 628 Myrick St in Council Chambers.
On Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 10 am-1pm. The event will move to KJ's IGA Parking Lot at 208 W 6th St in Waynesboro. The groups will host a gun turn in program. Citizens can also drop-off any expired prescriptions that need to be disposed of.
