Thursday is World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with using tobacco around the country.
In Richmond County, the debate over a smoking ban continues. This as several neighboring counties like Aiken & Columbia Counties already have bans in place. The Georgia Cancer Center claims 1,300 smokers die everyday across the country. That's close to half a million annually. FOX 54 spoke to an expert who says second hand smoke can be just as deadly.
Christine O'Meara – Director of Cancer Information & Awareness " 41,000 deaths in the united states are attributed to second hand smoke.That would be the equivalent to 569 school buses of 72 passengers each," says Christine O'Meara, Director of Cancer Information & Awareness.
Georgia Cancer Center says roughly 20% of adults in Richmond County smoke.
Next Tuesday Commissioners will vote on whether or not to pass the smoke free ordinance
