Columbia County Schools honors fallen safety chief with scholarship memorial

EVANS, GA (WFXG) - The Columbia County school district is honoring the life of their former school safety chief with a student scholarship awarded in his honor.

Chief Robert L. "Buddy" Hendry passed away in 2012 after a battle with cancer. He was Columbia County's first Director of Public Safety.

"Chief Hendry treasured each day protecting students and staff and serving them in a multitude of ways, including loaning a student his shoes and giving needy students lunch money," Superintendent, Dr. Sandra Carraway, said during the board of education's latest meeting. "Chief Hendry cherished his family and friends and lived his life with a great faith in God."

Hendry served as a Florida state trooper for 28 years before getting to work for Columbia County Schools in 1993.

Chief Hendry's wife established the $1,000 scholarship for a student planning to study criminal justice in college.

Grovetown High School senior, Mary Taylor Morris was awarded the scholarship this year.
