AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A huge discussion in Richmond County in 2018 is the fight to change the name of the John C Calhoun Expressway. The effort comes from Commissioner William Fennoy who has put the topic on the agenda of the weekly commission meeting for the past couple months.

Commissioner William Fennoy has been pushing to change the name of John C Calhoun Expressway. People may remember back in January, a huge buzz was created in Richmond County after Commissioner Fennoy jokingly suggested it be changed to Trump Calhoun Expressway. It was an sarcastic attempt for people to start discussion about the matter.

Those who are in support of the change say John C Calhoun was known for his racist views on slavery and African Americans. In a county that is predominately black Commissioner Fennoy believes there is no reason to honor John C. Calhoun. He is confident that voters in Richmond County will bring about the change because citizens do not have the same mindset of those in the1960s when the expressway name was given.

"If you go to Germany I doubt if you will see anything named after Adolf Hitler. If you go to Indian reservations I doubt you will see anything named after General Custard. So I think it is time for Richmond County and especially the elected officials to back my colleagues, follow suit and do something about it.", says Commissioner Fennoy.

If votes do not sway to his favor then he will spend the rest of his term pushing for the expressway to be changed. Commissioner Fennoy is also encouraging voters to read about John C. Calhoun so they can make an informed decision before heading to the polls.
