RICHMOND COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - It is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and the Richmond County Sheriff's Office collected expired and unwanted medications outside of the CVS on Walton Way and the CVS on Peach Orchard Road. This is all in efforts to promote a safe environment and to make sure these drugs do not get into the wrong hands.

With the opioid epidemic officials say it's very important for people to keep their drugs in a safe place and properly dispose of them. This year the Sheriff's Department partnered with the Augusta University Georgia Prevention Institute and they gave away drug lock boxes to keep medicine locked and safe from kids.

"It's twofold, we take it off the streets, take it away where it could fall in the hands of children or somebody getting a hold of it that doesn't necessarily need it. And then the environment where if it makes it back into the ground, water, food chain etc," said Sgt.Chris Masters, Community Service Division of Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

This event is held twice a year and the next one will be held in the fall.
