AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - It's a win for Mayor Hardie Davis to wrap up 2016 as commissioners finally pass the Ban the Box initiative.
Davis has long been a champion of the program that would remove the question asking job applicants about the criminal background off of the initial application.
With hundreds of Augustans returning to society after being locked up, he said it send the message that the city is willing to give folks who serve their time a fair shake.
Davis explains the effect he believes the policy will have.
"Well, I think it will have a tremendous impact when you have the number of returning citizens that we have here in Augusta. You couple that with the fact that the state has already done this back in 2014. It's been long overdue for us in Augusta," said Davis.
More than 100 cities across the country, including Atlanta, Columbus and Macon have adopted Ban the Box on city applications.
