GROVETOWN, GA (WFXG) - This week in our High 5 4 Kids segment, we introduce you to a rising star who's one of the top band players in her school....
Just a couple of years ago, she had second thoughts about whether or not band was for her.
Cherith Blair knows her niche. "I started in 6th grade playing the clarinet and I loved it all through middle school but I didn't know if it was going to be the thing for me in high school."
But it wasn't always that way. She had doubts about even playing in high school.
"Freshman year I came to band camp and I said I don't know if I'll like it. But the first day of band I absolutely loved it and I've been with it ever since," she says. And now, Cherith has risen to the top of her group. Her Band Director Brian Toney says having Cherith makes his job a lot easier.
"She served as a drum major this year and last year and she's been an excellent student leader, we're privileged in the band world to have lots of wonderful students and she's at the top of the list of what we have here at Grovetown high," says Toney.
Blair also holds a 3.6 GPA and is Vice President of the National Honor Society. And this aspiring pediatrician takes the responsibilities of being a leader very seriously. "You're seeing a difference in people and them being able to see you not as a leader or senior in the band, but as a friend. And that they trust enough to come and ask for help but they're not too scared."
Toney says his star senior is irreplaceable. "We're really blessed on how she leads as a drum major or field commander and how she works with other students and staff as well to make a very positive contribution at Grovetown High School."
Blair plans on attending the University of Georgia next fall. And yes, she hopes to play in that school's band as well.
