Georgia death row inmate denied clemency

A Georgia man sentenced to death for the murder of an Atlanta police officer has been denied clemency.

Gregory Paul Lawler was sentenced to death for the 1997 murder of officer John Sowa. Representatives of Lawler met with the State Board of Pardons and Paroles on Oct. 18 to request clemency. That request was denied. The denied request came after the review of all case materials to include the history of the
life of Lawler, criminal history and the circumstances of the crime committed. Lawler has exhausted all of his appeals and is scheduled to be executed Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.
