MARTINEZ, GA (WFXG) - A Martinez's family was destroyed on Thursday afternoon by what they believe to have been a lightning strike.
Homeowner Cody Cox said his neighbors reported hearing a loud crackle.
They went outside to find that the roof of his home was in flames.
Officials from the Columbia County Fire Department say it took them about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.
Cox told Fox 54 how he and his wife pulled up to their home to witness the devastation.
"The fire truck passes us and my wife is like it's not turning into our neighborhood, is it? Then, it turns in and she's like I hope it's not our house. We come up and she starts screaming oh my God, our house is on fire," said Cox.
The homeowners said they have spoken to the Red Cross and the agency will be assisting with arrangements for Cox, his pregnant wife and their children.
The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
