Safety Tips from Augusta Fire Department for when a Lightning Strikes

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - In the midst of the stormy summer months, lightning can be a factor especially with 4 workers recently being struck in Titans Farm.

Lightning is something that not a lot of people think can happen to them, but there's always a chance.

"When lightning is expected then you want to make sure when you reach your destination you have a place to go that you can get cover from," says Keith Lively, Battalion Chief of Augusta Fire Department.

He says staying inside is one of the best options to stay safe from a lightning strike because there's no safe place outside to protect you from lightning.

But sometimes the inevitable can't be avoided. If you're you are stuck outside with a group of people don't huddle too close together.

"If you're staying close to each other you may want to get a little further apart because lightning can travel from person to person," says Lively,

And here are also some basic tips that people might not know.

1.Stay away from water

2.Stay away from metal objects

3.Lightning is not attracted to them but they can conduct electricity

4. crouch underneath a short tree because taller ones tend to attract lightning.
