AIKEN COUNTY, SC (WFXG) - A church in Aiken was forced to cancel their Vacation Bible School after thieves stole their air conditioning units.
Four units were stolen from the Wesley United Methodist Church at a value of roughly $5,000 each. Nobody has been arrested.
It's a huge loss for this church that has a congregation of about 50 members. Thankfully the A/C company installed new units
Thursday, but the church is now trying to figure out how to pay the company back.
"I walked out the door and my heart just dropped," said Pastor Pattie Gordon.
Pastor Pattie Gordon describes the moment she realized her church's air conditioning units were stolen right before Vacation
Bible School -- forcing the church to cancel due to the relentless summer heat.
"It was a big kick for all of us, to not have it, we had teachers that were already prepared and did a lot to get their classrooms ready
and for the students and stuff that was a big issue," said Gordon.
The A/C's were stolen sometime last week, but it's this sign outside the church that's grabbing the public's attention. Although the suspects
are still out there, Pastor Gordon says their actions didn't go unseen.
"What kind of person would come and steal from a church? From the house of God? Even though I didn't see them, members didn't see them,
God saw them," said Gordon.
The air is flowing once again inside Wesley United, thanks to Holley A/C letting the church pay them back as they raise the money.
The hope is to have Vacation Bible School once again in July. The pastor prays for the thieves and hopes they will turn their lives around.
"We don't have a whole lot, but we can help. Help folks with whatever they need to be helped with and there's churches all over this Aiken community
folks do not have to be common criminals," said Gordon.
