Joan Mulholland speaks at GRU's MLK Jr. Celebration

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Augusta University, Paine College, and Augusta Tech came together to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday Friday

Former freedom rider and civil rights activist Joan Mulholland was the keynote speaker at the event.

She helped organize the March on Washington, and is pictured in the Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in in Mississippi in 1963.

Her fight for civil rights ended her up on death row and America's Most Wanted list.

"I went to church regularly and memorized all those bible verses that had me memorize do to others what you would have them do onto you. And love thy neighbor as thy self, and how to treat people, how to live. I could see that were a pack of hypocrites. We did not practice what we preached," Mulholland explained.

Mulholland said she's happy to see how far civil rights has come, but still feel racism is a problem that needs to continue to dissolve.
