COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - A woman is behind bars after deputies say she was involved in a shoplifting, and then led police on a car chase through Columbia County and into Richmond County.
According to an incident report from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to the Academy Sports in Evans Sunday night in reference to a shoplifting. The store manager told deputies a woman with orange hair walked out of the store, and set off the alarm system. The woman ran out of the store, dropping her purse with five stolen items in the parking lot.
Deputies looked at surveillance video from the store, and saw footage of a female being dropped off at the store, and also saw her putting the stolen items into her purse, Deputies were also able to get a license plate number for the car in the video.
Deputies were able to locate the car, and they initiated a traffic stop for failure to maintain lanes. The reports states the driver of the car continued driving into Richmond County, and stopped the car at the Air Sports on Augusta West Parkway.
Officials said the driver and passenger then got out of the car and fled on foot. Deputies were able to arrest Jawannica Haynes after a brief chase. Haynes was cited for: driving on a suspended license, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, failure to maintain lanes, no insurance and revoked registration. Haynes was not charged with the shoplifting crime, because deputies said video evidence shows the passenger in the vehicle was the offender.
Deputies are still looking for the shoplifting suspect, and the report states and orange wig was found at the scene of the traffic stop.
