MARTINEZ, GA (WFXG) - There was a heavy emergency response Sunday at Goodwill Industries on Washington Road. The store was evacuated after someone reported seeing a suspicious item inside the store.
The spokesperson for Goodwill Industries says it was a shot-put. According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the item was reported at 5:23 p.m.
The sheriff’s office and Columbia County Fire Department blocked off the area around the store.
“A customer walked in. He saw what he believed to be a cannon ball. So he went in and got it and brought it outside and called the sheriff’s office to properly dispose of it," said Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Tim Johnson.
The Richmond County Bomb Squad assessed the item, x-rayed and determined it was a safe item.
The store will open Monday as usual.
