AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A Richmond County teacher is on paid administrative leave Friday after video surfaced an altercation between a student and him.
The terrifying screams of middle school students ring out during a fight between a child and his teacher. Glenn Hills Middle School 6th-grade science and social studies teacher Akenga Smith was seen shoving a boy into a desk, slamming him onto the floor and pushing him out the classroom door after what appears to be a physical confrontation.
“I seen a grown man putting his hands on a kid. I mean, I know the kid was all in his face, brushing up on him and everything, but that don’t give him the right to do what he did,” says Juwan Adams after watching the video. “He could have been the bigger person and gotten the principal or an officer or something.”
Richmond County School System’s spokesperson says they learned about the incident Friday morning. The board of education’s administration and police department are investigating. That teacher now on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
One parent who did not want to be identified says Smith was justified. “It’s authority. Like, why are you pushing up on authority? It really wasn’t a bad thing with the teacher- he was pushing and restrained him and put him out the classroom. I don’t think nothing wrong with that.”
Investigators will present that case file to a judge to determine if charges will be filed.
