AUGUSTA, GA. (WFXG) - For the third year in a row - people laced up their sneakers and put on pink for Sista Strut. Dozens of people participated in the annual 3K run/walk that kicked off at Augusta Commons.
It’s a national breast cancer awareness walk that brings lots of people together, including local breast cancer survivors who have been friends for more than 30 years.
Gail Peake said sharing and surviving breast cancer with her best friend, Krista Bonner, has brought them closer together. It showed them strength and support from others that they’d never known, both women said.
“I was there for her and when I went through it, she was there for me. and we just, held each others hand," said Krista Bonner, who celebrates five years of being cancer free in November.
“We shaved each others’ heads, so, it was bonding,” said Gail Peake, who celebrates 13 years of being cancer free this November.
iHeartMedia Augusta Cluster Marketing and Promotions Manager Cher Best said the annual event celebrates survivors and honors those who lost their battle with breast cancer. The money and support stays local.
