COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - FOX 54 is a proud sponsor of the Relay For Life of Aiken County. On top of raising money for research, Relay For Life can often provide support in a variety of ways to people and families who are in for the fight of their lives against cancer.
A local Columbia County mother tells FOX 54 that support made all the difference in her son's fight. Lucas Sellers is this week's "High 5 4 Kids" honoree.
Life hasn't always been a walk in the park for the 8-year-old. He was diagnosed with leukemia a little over a year ago and admitted into the Georgia Cancer Center that same day. That's when 9 months of intense chemo therapy started. "I didn’t believe it, " his mother, Danielle Sellers said. "Like how can my kid have cancer?"
So how did he get thru it?
"I just take deep breaths," Lucas said.
His mother said it also helped that folks were cheering him on during his fight.
“We only have my husband’s parents here, so we don’t have that support system,” she said, “so coming from the hospital it’s amazing - knowing that we have people that know what we’re going thru.”
So Lucas went into his fight against cancer swinging.
"He is always so happy," Danielle said. "He doesn’t let anything get him down."
"Sometimes it can be tough," Lucas said. "You just have to fight threw."
Now he's wining. He's in the maintenance portion of his treatment and he'll still need chemo once a month until May 2021, but he's mother hopes "that he’ll continue to be the same kid."
"She’s the greatest mom in the world,"Lucas said.
