City of Aiken debuts new senior and youth center

AIKEN (WFXG) - The City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism hosts the grand opening of the Aiken Senior and Youth Center at 841 Edgefield Avenue NW on Wednesday.

It’s a state of the art recreation and event rental space featuring a large banquet hall with a seated capacity of almost 300, a kitchen, computer lounge, and a classroom.

The new space can accommodate large formal events like weeding and birthday parties.

The City said they had out grown the space at the Odell Weeks Center and other facilities in the area so it was necessary to expand services on the west and north side of the city.

Jessica Campbell, director of the City of Aiken Parks and Recreation, added: “This gives us additional space for not only for the programming needs to be able to grow our enrichment programs, exercise classes. We have a wonderful grant to be able to offer evident space programming here at this facility so we can grow that and then also we have rental space now that’s available for the public.”

Rental space is available on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Campbell added that the youth 13 to 15 age group is harder to serve, but leaders listened to the youth’s new ideas and have a lot in the works for the new center that will cater to that age group.
