AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - The life of a teen that was murdered back in 2017 is being remembered by those who were close to her. A community of people gathered, despite the weather, to remember the life of Latania Janell Carwell on what would have been her 18th birthday.
Alexis Bowmen organized a balloon release to celebrate Carwell. “We definitely want to keep her memory alive in the city and I definitely wanted to do something for her birthday.”
Carwell was murdered and left behind a home in the woods. A group of those that care for her wanted to release balloons where she was found to be close to her spirit.
“Janell, even her name is love, she represents love and she represents unifying this city and that’s what she did and that’s what I hope she continues to do. Regardless of the violence that’s going on now, it’s time for us to reach one and teach one and give back to our communities,” said Ray Montana, a community activist.
As they spread sea shells in her remembrance, they hope they can spread love and unity in their community.
“It’s time for us to come together and celebrate life while we still have a life and that’s what we’re trying to do now, we’re trying to unite the community,” Montana said.
