EVANS, GA (WFXG) - A signing ceremony was held by Congressman Jody Hice for a Greenbriar High School student who is making his way to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
“This is the type of individual, the caliber we need leading our military,” Hice said.
Out of 25 counties in the district, 8 students were appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy and Justin Dygert was one of them.
“My junior year I found the Naval Academy and knowing what it has to provide me, all the opportunities, leadership opportunities and what I can do in the future, I just found that was the best fit for me to serve and be a part of something that’s bigger than myself,” Dygert said.
An academy appointment entitles a student to the equivalent of a full undergraduate scholarship, including room and board, medical and dental care, and a monthly stipend.
“The process is extremely difficult, first a student has to want it and they contact our office, they can’t go without a nomination from a congressional office,” Hice explained.
Congressman Hice says Dygert is the third person from Greenbriar High School that has been appointed since he’s been a member of congress.
“The competition and the amount of excellence required to receive an appointment is over the top. Students must absolutely excel academically, athletically and in leadership capability,”Hice said.
Dygert says this is such a surreal moment for him to see how far his hard work has taken him. “It’s an amazing honor, it’s something that I can’t really believe happened to me, knowing all that I’ve done throughout high school and all my life has paid of to this is amazing and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
