EVANS, Ga. (WFXG) - UPDATE: Columbia County School District Police have released new information about a student found with a gun at Greenbrier High School.

According to the incident report, the student became combative and had to be restrained while police collected the weapon. Police charged the student with carrying a weapon in a school safety zone and taken to the Richmond County Youth Detention Center.

An investigation revealed that the student had taken the gun from the locked car of a family member. The family member told police he kept the gun in the car because he was concerned about the student getting ahold of it. The local magistrate's office told police that there would not be a warrant issued for the gun owner.

Administrators at Greenbrier High School discovered a gun on campus Thursday.

In a letter sent home to parents, Principal Chip Fulmer says administrators responded to a classroom for an unruly student. During the intervention, they discovered a gun in the student's bookbag. Officials say the firearm was immediately removed and the school contacted deputies and school district police.

Fulmer says the incident was handled without disrupting the school day. He goes on to say that the Columbia County School District and Greenbrier High School takes incidents like this extremely seriously and all parties will be held responsible according to the student code of conduct.

Safety of students and staff is a top priority. To that end, this message is intended to keep our parents informed about incidents that occur, as well as our school’s appropriate response. Please rest assured that every effort is taken to ensure a safe environment for students and staff, including the presence of two highly trained school district police and a partnership with local law enforcement. Safety, however, is a shared responsibility and we encourage parents to speak with their students about the importance of “See something. Say something.” - Principal Chip Fulmer
