BURKE COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - On Thursday, August 9,  Sheriff Alfonzo Williams introduced a "smart" tablet program at the Burke County Detention Center to help facility staff manage the inmates.

The  Detention Center has an existing contract with Pay Tel Communications, Inc, an inmate telephone service provider.  Pay Tel offered  42 tablets to the Detention Center along with educational, entertainment and communication services to the inmate population.

Using a "learn and earn" model, entertainment content (comedy, games, movies, and music) is earned through time spent using the educational content. One minute of education usage equals one minute of entertainment.

Additionally, entertainment may be earned through exploratory content (books) at the rate of four minutes of exploratory usage equals one minute of entertainment.

Sheriff Williams commented, "Providing inmates with regular access to meaningful educational opportunities not only increases the knowledge base of the inmate, it also has proven to reduce acts of violence against other inmates or staff, and other violations within the facility."
